Biography

Claudia Comte is a Swiss contemporary artist, born in Grancy in 1983 and based in Basel. Her vibrant, immersive practice encompasses sculpture, painting, printmaking, murals, and installation. From 2004 to 2007, she studied Visual Arts at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL). She subsequently completed a Master of Art in Science of Education, specializing in Visual Arts, at the Haute École Pédagogique in Lausanne between 2008 and 2010. Comte’s work is driven by a longstanding fascination with organic patterns, biomorphic forms, and the relationships between natural and cultural systems. She translates these interests into monumental wall paintings, serial sculptures, and immersive environments that draw on motifs such as waves, cacti, sonar imagery, and geological strata. Her practice balances methodical structures with a playful visual energy, combining traditional manual processes with industrial production and digital technologies. The resulting geometric and biomorphic compositions appear simultaneously rigorous and dynamic. Drawing on abstraction, popular culture, art history, and ecological forms, her works encourage viewers to consider how shape, rhythm, color, and space operate across both constructed and natural environments. Comte has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions around the world. Her work is held in major public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Art Collection of the Canton of Zurich. MoMA’s collection includes works from her 2015 series Curves and Corners. In 2019–2020, Castello di Rivoli presented How to Grow and Still Stay the Same Shape, the first exhibition dedicated to Comte by an Italian public museum. Through her evolving practice, Comte has established herself as a distinctive voice in contemporary art, transforming surfaces and architectural spaces into dynamic environments that investigate form, scale, ecology, and the memory of materials.
