Biography

Teresa Solar Abboud (born 1985 in Madrid, Spain) is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Madrid. Her multidisciplinary practice is centred primarily on sculpture and drawing, alongside video and photography, and explores the morphology of speech and, by extension, the relationship between language, thought and meaning. Her work develops through layered narratives in which concepts such as resistance, isolation, connectivity and immunity are explored through tactile and often organic forms. Clay is particularly important to her sculptural practice, alongside materials including textiles, polyurethane foam, metal and found objects. Solar Abboud’s practice brings together bodily, geological, natural and industrial references. Her sculptures and installations often take the form of complex ecosystems in which different families of forms coexist, creating connections between the organic and the synthetic. Her work draws on fiction, natural history and personal narratives, while her sustained interest in language is connected to questions of translation and the construction of meaning. She studied Fine Arts in Madrid and later completed a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies at the Universidad Europea de Madrid. Her work has been presented internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including at CA2M – Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo in Madrid, Kunsthalle Lissabon, Der TANK at Institut Kunst in Basel, Matadero Madrid and the Liverpool Biennial. In 2021, she participated in the Liverpool Biennial with the public installation Osteoclast, curated by Manuela Moscoso. Her work was also included in the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani in 2022, where she presented Tunnel Boring Machine at the Arsenale. In recent years, Solar Abboud has developed large-scale sculptural installations and projects including Birth of Islands at The High Line in New York in 2024 and When Forms Come Alive at Hayward Gallery in London in the same year. Her first retrospective, Sueño Máquina de Pájaro, was presented at MACBA in Barcelona and subsequently at CA2M in Madrid, accompanied by her first artist monograph. Her work is held in public collections including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Colección Jumex and the Fundación Botín collection. Solar Abboud’s work continues to investigate the relationships between language, the body, material transformation and the environments—both natural and constructed—in which forms of life and thought develop. Through sculpture, drawing, video and installation, she creates hybrid forms and layered narratives that connect personal experience with broader questions surrounding nature, technology, geology and the processes through which meaning is produced.
