Biography
Angela Bulloch is a Canadian contemporary artist, born in Rainy River, Ontario, in 1966, who lives and works in Berlin. She studied at Goldsmiths College in London from 1985 to 1988 and emerged in the late 1980s as part of the generation associated with the Young British Artists (YBAs). She gained recognition for her investigations into systems, rules, logic, and technology within art.
Bulloch’s practice encompasses installation, sculpture, video, light, sound, and interactive media. She frequently employs modular structures, LED technology, grids, and programmed systems to examine the intersections of order, control, chance, and human behavior. Her Pixel Box series, one of the best-known aspects of her practice, exemplifies her interest in how abstract systems structure perception. The works reduce and transform source images into sequences of shifting monochromatic light, questioning how visual information is constructed and interpreted.
Bulloch also creates participatory and responsive environments in which technology mediates the relationship between the artwork and its viewers. Her work has been presented at major international institutions and exhibitions, including Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Venice Biennale. Her works are held in prominent collections, including those of MoMA and the Centre Pompidou. Throughout her career, Bulloch has continued to investigate the intersections of art, science, music, and design, producing works that combine Minimalist forms, conceptual rigor, and technological experimentation.
