Biography

Rineke Dijkstra is a Dutch contemporary artist, born on June 2, 1959, in Sittard, the Netherlands, who lives and works in Amsterdam. Celebrated for her powerful and contemplative photographic and video portraits, she explores identity, vulnerability, and transitional moments in people’s lives. Dijkstra studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1981 to 1986 and subsequently worked as a commercial photographer. A turning point in her artistic development came in 1991, when she photographed herself immediately after completing a strenuous swimming session as part of her rehabilitation following a serious bicycle accident. The resulting image, Self-Portrait, Marnixbad, Amsterdam, Netherlands, June 19, 1991, helped establish the direct, frontal approach that would become characteristic of her portraiture and inspired her best-known series, Beach Portraits. Begun in 1992, Beach Portraits comprises frontal, full-length photographs of children and adolescents taken on beaches across Europe and the United States. Set against minimal backgrounds, the portraits capture the poised yet uncertain transition between childhood and adulthood with an unflinching but empathetic gaze. Dijkstra continued to develop this approach in subsequent series, portraying Israeli soldiers at different stages of their military service and following individual subjects over extended periods. One notable example is Almerisa, a Bosnian refugee whom Dijkstra first photographed in 1994 and continued to portray for many years. Across these works, her subjects are often positioned centrally and face the camera directly, creating images characterized by both formal clarity and psychological depth. Throughout her career, Dijkstra has expanded her practice to include video and multichannel installations while retaining portraiture as its central concern. Her work has been presented in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale. In 2012, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York jointly organized Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective, her first midcareer retrospective in the United States and the most comprehensive presentation of her work at that time. Dijkstra’s distinctions include the Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize—now known as the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize—and the 2017 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. Her photographs and videos, held in major museum collections worldwide, invite viewers to consider how stillness and presence, compositional restraint and psychological nuance can reveal profound aspects of human experience and the formation of identity.
