A Gente se encontra aqui hoje, amanhã em outro lugar. Enquanto isso Deus é Deusa. Santa gravidade. Enquanto isso Deus Á Deusa. Santa gravidade is one of Ernesto Neto’s signature hanging sculptures. Made of translucent polyamide, it maintains a precarious balance through a system of counterweights made of Styrofoam and rice. The title—which translates as “We meet each other today, tomorrow in another place. In the meanwhile, God is Goddess. Saint Gravity”—invokes encounters of various forms, beings, and divine entities.
Crisscrossing the space in an elegant dance, amorphous greenish and pink nylon forms—including long, stocking-like tubes suspended from the ceiling—make up an expansive yet light-footed entity. A decisive work in Neto’s extensive oeuvre, A Gente operates in a state of energetic balance in which every element is involved in a spatial and temporal union that seeks to be explored by bodies moving in a constant flux of changing positions, perspectives, and relations.
Gravity shows itself as a force that unites all bodies and matter, as a common denominator and mediator of differences, while the voluptuous shapes, palpable textures, and sensual materiality open up our senses to the fluidity and transformation guiding the entire journey through the exhibition space.
