Details

Aufzugbett (Elevator Bed) is a circular bed mounted on a disk that can be raised and lowered as required through a hydraulic scissor lift. When exhibited, visitors can book the bed for overnight stays, allowing them to spend the night in the gallery. A dial is placed on either side of the headboard which sets the object into motion, permitting it to rise with a gradual horizontal rotation to 180 degrees, and reach a maximum height of over 400 centimeters. Drawers for per sonal items and clothing are located underneath the bed; a minibar is installed below an adjacent nightstand, and a coffee machine under the other. Breakfast is served in the morning, before the space opens to the general public.

Commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary for Carsten Höller’s exhibition “Soma” at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, November 5, 2010–February 2, 2011, curated by Udo Kittelmann and Dorothée Brill.
