Kapwani Kiwanga

Kapwani Kiwanga was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1978 and grew up in nearby Brantford, where she attended art classes at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant. She has explained that growing up in Brantford, located on the Haldimand Tract and within the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples, shaped her understanding of colonialism and Indigenous histories in Canada. Kiwanga subsequently studied anthropology and comparative religion at McGill University in Montreal before pursuing art through the "La Seine" programme at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at Le Fresnoy–Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing. She currently lives and works in Paris.
