Biography

Heimo Zobernig (born 1958, Mauthen, Carinthia) is an Austrian artist who lives and works in Vienna. His multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, painting, video, installation, performance, and exhibition design. Since the late 1970s, Zobernig has developed a sustained investigation into the conditions of artistic production and the systems through which art is presented and understood. His work frequently employs a reduced formal vocabulary, while questioning established conventions surrounding the artwork, exhibition space, and the perception of art. Zobernig studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1977 to 1980 and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna from 1980 to 1985. During the early stages of his career he worked as a stage designer and participated in performances, before developing an increasingly varied practice that included painting, sculpture, and installation. In the mid-1980s, his paintings and sculptures adopted reduced geometric structures, establishing an engagement with abstraction, colour, form, and systems that has remained central to his work. His approach has been associated with a critical examination of the conventions and institutional frameworks that shape artistic production. Alongside his artistic practice, Zobernig has held a number of teaching positions. He was a visiting professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg in 1994–95 and taught sculpture at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1999 to 2000. From 2000 to 2021, he was Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His pedagogical work has accompanied an artistic practice that continually moves between different media and approaches to the production and presentation of art. Zobernig has exhibited internationally since the early 1980s, including at documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 and documenta X in 1997. His exhibitions and projects have been presented at institutions including Kunsthalle Bern, Wiener Secession, Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Portikus Frankfurt, mumok Vienna, Kunsthalle Basel, K21 Düsseldorf, Tate St Ives, Centre Pompidou, Kunsthaus Graz, Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, Mudam Luxembourg, Malmö Konsthall, Museum Ludwig Cologne, and MIT List Visual Arts Center. In 2015, he represented Austria at the 56th Venice Biennale. His work has been recognized with several major Austrian and international distinctions. He received the Otto Mauer Prize in 1993, the Prize for Fine Arts of the City of Vienna in 1997, the Austrian Friedrich Kiesler Prize for Architecture and Art in 2010, and the Roswitha Haftmann Prize in 2016. His work is held in institutional collections including the Generali Foundation Collection, on permanent loan to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Zobernig’s extensive body of work continues to examine the relationship between artistic form, institutional structures, perception, and the conditions through which contemporary art is produced and encountered.
