Details
Putting the formal language of modernity to the test, Heimo Zobernig's works employ strategies of simplification, standardization, systematization and appropriation of industrial models and patterns. Some recurring motifs in his paintings are monochrome elements, grids, strips, and a fixed palette that draws on 20th-century painting trends such as geometric abstraction and minimalism. However, this tradition is playfully subverted in works such as Untitled (REAL/EGAL), into which Zobernig incorporates the words “real” and “egal” (irrelevant in German), which are superimposed and barely legible, in turn creating differently coloured geometric patterns and thus questioning their functionality in a manner that is both humorous and aesthetically pleasing.
